If you have the knowledge, you can hack the code all you want. Still, FreeCAD has a huge advantage over the previous two: it is open source, thus totally open (if you are not familiar with this development model, you should look it up). I don't know the numbers for VariCAD, but it is done by a commercial company, so it must have a lot more manpower than FreeCAD. SolidWorks has a team of maybe tens (hundreds?) of paid programmers. But it is not complete yet, and won't be for quite some time, because its development is mainly done by three guys on their spare time (Jürgens, Werner and Yorik), with sporadic help from other contributors (still, FreeCAD's development is surprisingly fast and active, its team of developers highly dedicated). To get it you have to register in order to get a password to put in when you install it. To export it as another format it’s a per translation fee of $50-60 for each model. From the list of formats, it looks as if its focus is on importing part files. I wasn’t able to import a Pro/E assembly either. However, you can save a SolidWorks Assembly as a part and import it.

Can’t Export to another format for free.While it doesn’t have as much functionality as something like SolidWorks, it is fairly intuitive and easy to create things even though there’s a little more clicking and dialog boxes. It fairly basic and takes some getting use to. You can also, model parts and assemblies, render, and make drawings. On top of just being able to view the file, you can make changes to, add geometry and get information from the model. PowerSHAPE-e allows you to import a model from many of the most common 3D CAD Packages including SolidWorks, CATIA, PRO/E and Inventor.
